AI and youth engagement power global journey for Ningxia goji berries
Ningxia,China – September 04, 2026 – A joint communication initiative using artificial intelligence and social media is turning the Ningxia goji berry from a traditional export into a cultural envoy, encouraging cross-border dialogue among young people worldwide.
The results of the Ningxia Goji AI-Empowered International Publicity and Promotion Project were presented at the closing ceremony of the 9th Goji Industry Expo. Co-launched by China Daily 21st Century Media and Ningxia University in October 2025, the project aims to share the region’s agricultural heritage with a global audience.
For years, the international promotion of Ningxia’s signature goji berries faced obstacles such as inconsistent translations and a lack of multilingual references. To address this, the project team built a linguistic database containing 14.3 million Chinese characters, alongside standardized terms in five languages: Chinese, English, Japanese, Arabic, and Russian.
“The project combines multilingual data with specialized AI tools,” said Liu Yanhui, executive dean of the School of Foreign Languages at Ningxia University. She added that the system assists with automated content creation, speech interaction, human editing, and data sharing, creating a long-term digital platform that helps industrial information cross language barriers.
Beyond the data, the campaign focuses heavily on human-interest storytelling. Through a network of newly created social media accounts, the project has published over 400 multimedia posts detailing the berry’s history, scientific research, and role in green regional development.
By tailoring content for Generation Z, the project has reached over 1.7 million young international users since February. The strategy adjusts to different cultural preferences, emphasizing scientific health benefits for English-speaking audiences while focusing on traditional wellness for Japanese and Arabic speakers.
This targeted approach has spurred active participation. Young overseas followers have started sharing their own goji-infused recipes, tea drinks, and baked goods online. On the project’s official Instagram account, users aged 18 to 24 now make up 25 percent of the total follower base. With the online effort, the project invited international students from more than 40 countries living in Ningxia Hui autonomous region to visit local goji fields .

Through hands-on experience with cultivation and harvesting in Zhongning county, the students learned about the crop’s cultural background. Their trips were documented in a video series titled “Ningxia Goji Discovery,” sharing their authentic experiences with a wider global audience.
Zhang Haigang, deputy editor-in-chief of 21st Century Media, said at the expo that agricultural products serve as a natural bridge for crossing cultural divides. The international journey of these products is about more than commercial trade; it represents a display of green ecological practices and meaningful dialogue between civilizations, Zhang said.
Moving forward, the team plans to continue using new technologies and global social media networks to produce stories that international audiences “can easily understand, enjoy watching, and are eager to share.” Future content will also cover environmental, social, and governance topics, such as Ningxia’s “agri-photovoltaic” model that pairs solar power generation with goji cultivation.
“From a single red berry to a vast world of knowledge; from a single production region to deep dialogue with global civilizations,” Zhang said. “What we are building today is not just an international communication network, but a new digital channel for agricultural products to navigate their global journey.”
