Fort Lauderdale Leads Florida in Alcohol-Related Fatal Crash Index
Fort Lauderdale, FL – August 25, 2026 – Fort Lauderdale ranks first among Florida’s 30 most populous cities on a newly published alcohol-related fatal crash index, according to a study released today by Rosen Injury Law Firm in partnership with data agency 1Point21 Interactive.
The analysis draws on four years of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) data (2021–2024), ranking cities using a composite score based on total crashes, per-capita rates, and the overall share of fatal crashes involving alcohol.

Fort Lauderdale Claims Top Spot: The city recorded 18 alcohol-related fatal crashes over four years—an annual rate of 2.39 per 100,000 residents. Alcohol was involved in 15.25% of all local fatal crashes.

Jacksonville Saw Highest Raw Totals: Jacksonville recorded 58 alcohol-related fatal crashes (1.42 per 100,000 residents), placing second overall on the composite index.

Surprise Suburban High-Riders: Sunrise ranked third (1.77 per 100,000 residents), boasting the highest alcohol-involved crash share among top cities at 23.33%. Suburban hubs Fort Myers and Boca Raton placed fourth and fifth, outranking major nightlife hubs like Miami and Orlando.

Statewide Improvement: Florida recorded 2,225 alcohol-related fatal crashes (3,344 deaths) between 2021 and 2024. However, Florida’s rate plummeted 53% – from 3.46 per 100,000 in 2021 to 1.62 in 2024—ranking Florida 31st nationally.
“The data indicates that concentrated nightlife districts are not the sole driver of alcohol-related crash burdens,” said a lead researcher “Suburban cities with longer drive distances and fewer transit alternatives carry significant per-capita risk. Safety and enforcement strategies built strictly around downtown entertainment corridors may be targeting the wrong geography.”

Researchers analyzed 2021–2024 NHTSA FARS data across Florida’s 30 most populous cities (populations 89,000 to 1.0M based on 2025 Census estimates). The composite score weighted three core variables: annual crash rate per 100,000 residents, total four-year alcohol-related fatal crashes, and the proportion of overall fatal crashes involving alcohol.
