Shelton Powell of Cart Capital Reviews Encourages Entrepreneurs to Build Stronger Business Foundations

Miami entrepreneur Shelton Powell is raising awareness about the importance of operational discipline, realistic expectations, and long-term thinking as more people pursue eCommerce business ownership.

Shelton Powell, founder of Cart Capital, is calling for a shift in how aspiring entrepreneurs approach eCommerce, encouraging people to focus less on shortcuts and more on building the operational foundations that support sustainable businesses.

As online commerce continues to grow around the world, Powell believes many new business owners underestimate the systems required to operate successfully over time.

“Most people fail in eCommerce not because the model doesn’t work, but because they try to build alone,” Powell said. “They underestimate how much structure, planning, and execution goes into building something that lasts.”

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, eCommerce sales in the United States continue to reach record levels each year, while global retail eCommerce sales are projected to exceed $7 trillion by 2027. At the same time, studies from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics show that roughly half of new businesses do not survive beyond five years, highlighting the importance of strong operational practices from the beginning.

Powell believes the conversation around entrepreneurship should spend less time on rapid growth and more time on preparation.

“A lot of people are entering this space focused on excitement instead of infrastructure,” he said. “The reality is that eCommerce is operationally heavy. If you don’t build good systems early, the business eventually exposes those weaknesses.”

Founded after Powell began working in eCommerce in 2017, Cart Capital was created to address a challenge he repeatedly observed. Many people wanted to own an online business but lacked the operational knowledge, supplier relationships, and internal processes required to manage one effectively.

Instead of concentrating on a single part of the business, Powell built Cart Capital around complete operational support, including product research, supplier coordination, paid media, fulfilment, creative production, and customer retention.

“We own and operate the infrastructure behind eCommerce brands,” Powell said. “For us, the work has always been about building repeatable systems rather than chasing trends.”

That philosophy has guided the company as it has managed more than 150 eCommerce brands, collectively generating more than $50 million in revenue.

Powell says one of the biggest lessons from that experience came after accepting partnerships that were not the right fit.

“Early on we learned the hard way that the wrong person in an engagement can be more detrimental than no engagement at all,” he said. “That changed how we approached every partnership. We became much more intentional about alignment and expectations.”

Research continues to support the value of operational discipline. Industry studies consistently identify weak planning, poor inventory management, ineffective marketing execution, and cash flow challenges among the leading causes of small business failure. Businesses that regularly monitor performance metrics and adjust their strategies based on measurable results are generally better positioned to respond to changing market conditions.

For Powell, measurement remains one of the most important habits a business owner can develop.

“Everything gets measured,” he said. “If it isn’t tracked, it doesn’t exist.”

At the same time, he believes numbers should never replace communication.

“The numbers tell you what happened,” Powell said. “The feedback tells you if it mattered.”

Rather than encouraging people to pursue entrepreneurship simply because it is popular, Powell hopes more aspiring business owners will spend time developing the habits that support long-term success.

He recommends that individuals:

  • Learn how business operations work before attempting to scale.

  • Track goals, progress, and performance consistently.

  • Solve the root cause of recurring problems instead of temporary symptoms.

  • Build repeatable systems instead of depending on constant improvisation.

  • Seek honest feedback alongside measurable results.

  • Stay adaptable as technology and customer expectations evolve.

“Problem solving and open-mindedness are not optional,” Powell said. “That’s the job.”

He also encourages experienced entrepreneurs to share practical knowledge with newcomers instead of contributing to unrealistic expectations.

“Success comes from improving systems over time,” Powell said. “The strongest businesses aren’t usually built the fastest. They’re built deliberately.”

Call to Action

Powell encourages aspiring entrepreneurs to spend time learning the operational side of business before launching or expanding an eCommerce venture. He hopes experienced business owners will mentor others, share practical lessons, and promote realistic conversations about what sustainable business ownership actually requires. Individuals can begin by reviewing their own processes, measuring their progress consistently, and focusing on steady improvement rather than quick results.
