He later studied heating and air at Pitt Community College, where he graduated ahead of his class.

His career has also included work with Pair Electronics and experience involving indoor and outdoor wiring, electronics, security systems, and single-family residential construction. That combination has given Bright experience with both the broader planning side of a project and the technical systems that eventually sit behind finished walls.

Planning for Homes That Will Keep Changing

Bright points to changing homeowner expectations as one reason early coordination has become increasingly important.

Security systems, smart thermostats, internet equipment, cameras, home audio, and connected devices can all require wiring, power, networking, or strategic placement. While specific products may change over time, Bright believes builders can still prepare homes for future upgrades.

One example is the placement of conduit in areas where wiring may need to be added later.

“You cannot predict every piece of technology a homeowner might want five or ten years from now,” Bright said. “You can still make it easier for the house to adapt by thinking about access and infrastructure while construction is happening.”

This approach does not require installing every possible system during the original build. Instead, it involves identifying areas where small decisions made during construction could make future changes easier and less disruptive.

Connecting the Work of Different Trades

Bright also sees early planning as a coordination issue rather than simply a technology issue.

HVAC installers, electricians, low-voltage technicians, security specialists, and other trades may need access to the same areas of a home. Decisions that work well for one system can create complications for another if the project is not viewed as a whole.

“Good construction management is not just about keeping a schedule moving,” Bright said. “You also have to understand how the work being done today affects the people coming in tomorrow.”

His technical background has influenced that perspective. Studying heating and air gave Bright a closer understanding of mechanical systems, while his electronics and wiring experience exposed him to the growing role technology plays in residential construction.

Looking Beyond the Blueprint

Bright believes plans remain essential, but he also places value on physically reviewing a project and checking field conditions before assuming that a proposed solution will work.

A layout that appears straightforward on paper may become more complicated when framing, ductwork, wiring, equipment access, or another building system occupies the same space.

For Bright, these situations reinforce the value of asking questions early and maintaining communication between trades throughout a project.

His experience also extends beyond professional work. Bright has volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and remains active outside construction through golf, pickleball, rock climbing, off-road biking, skiing, fishing, and fitness.

As residential construction continues to incorporate more technology, Bright expects the need for coordination between traditional building trades and connected systems to keep growing. He believes the fundamentals, however, will remain familiar: understand the project as a whole, communicate early, and make decisions with the next stage of construction in mind.

About Travis Bright

Travis Bright is a Greenville, North Carolina-based construction professional with experience in construction management, single-family residential building, heating and air systems, electronics, indoor and outdoor wiring, and security.
