Snowboy didn’t set out to write a novel. The idea grew slowly, shaped by the kind of conversations parents have with a child who is scared or sad and needs more than reassurance. The finished book follows Duke, a boy raised in Santa’s workshop who is still grieving the mentor he lost. When Duke learns that his birth mother is alive and that an ancient danger is stirring beneath the North Pole, he has to leave behind everything familiar to go find her. It reads as an adventure story on the surface, but the subject underneath it, Snowboy says, is what it looks like to carry loss instead of burying it.<\/p>\n

That idea shows up before the story even starts. Snowboy dedicates the book to “anyone who has ever felt they were living in the shadows,” a line he says applies as much to his daughter as it does to any reader who picks it up.<\/p>\n

“I wanted her to see a character carry something hard instead of just being told to be brave,” Snowboy said. “If this book does that for one other kid, or one other family, then it already did what it was supposed to do.”<\/p>\n
