Mishuk’s work in Philip Kotler’s Essentials of Modern Marketing began with a question that was more practical than theoretical: Why should ordinary people need paperwork, an expensive smartphone or a visit to a financial-services outlet simply to open a mobile-money account?

Mishuk’s answer was to design Nagad around the circumstances of the customer—not around the conventions of the financial industry.

The platform introduced digital know-your-customer technology, account opening through the *167# USSD code, transfers to any mobile number and lower-cost services intended to make digital finance accessible to mass-market users. The company’s updated presentation describes these features as the foundation of Nagad’s financial-inclusion strategy.

That approach transformed Nagad from a challenger entering a concentrated market into one of Bangladesh’s largest financial platforms.

As of May 2026, Nagad reported 109.2 million registered customers and 21.5 million monthly active customers. The registered base expanded roughly 18-fold over six years, while the company calculated a 33.9% five-year compound annual growth rate for active customers.

For Tanvir, those figures represent more than user acquisition. They are evidence that a marketing strategy built around affordability, accessibility and simplicity can become national infrastructure.

From Marketing Theory to a Kotler Case Study

Nagad was selected as a case study for the Bangladesh edition of Philip Kotler’s Essentials of Modern Marketing, with Mishuk participating as a case co-author. Reports announcing the inclusion credited Nagad’s rapid growth, timely innovation and unconventional approach to marketing and financial inclusion.

The recognition was significant because Nagad’s story did not fit the conventional model of marketing built primarily around advertising campaigns. Its strongest marketing decisions were embedded in the service itself.

Mishuk treated product design, pricing and distribution as parts of a single customer-acquisition strategy. A person with a feature phone could begin onboarding by dialling *167#. A smartphone user could register through eKYC by submitting a national identity document and selfie. Customers could also open accounts through Nagad’s physical agent network.

The result was a financial product designed to travel across income groups, generations and geographies.

When the Kotler case was announced in early 2023, public reports placed Nagad’s registered customer base at more than 70 million. The May 2026 strategic presentation now reports 109.2 million—a gain of almost 40 million registered customers since the case first received public attention.

The textbook captured Nagad’s early disruption. The newer numbers show what happened when that strategy continued to scale.

From Less Than $1 Billion to $32 Billion

Nagad’s annual transaction value rose from approximately $800 million in 2019 to $32 billion in 2025, representing a 42-fold expansion in six years, according to the company presentation.

The platform estimated that it captured about 19% of Bangladesh’s mobile-financial-services market in 2025. Nagad projects annual transaction value of approximately $40 billion for 2026.

Its headline operating indicators now include:

$32 billion in calendar-year 2025 transaction volume;

109.2 million registered customers;

21.5 million monthly active customers;

approximately 19% market share; and

positive profit after tax since FY2024.

Nagad reported approximately $7 million in profit after tax for FY2025.

The scale helps explain why Mishuk’s work attracted attention from Kotler-linked organisations. In 2023, he received the Kotler Iconic Achiever of the Year award for his approach to business management, marketing systems and innovation. Contemporary coverage identified him as Nagad’s founder and credited his leadership with helping the company establish itself as a major digital-finance brand.

Distribution Became Tanvir’s Competitive Moat

Digital businesses often emphasise applications, algorithms and user interfaces. Mishuk’s strategy also recognised that Bangladesh’s financial economy still depends heavily on physical distribution.

Nagad’s network took approximately seven years to construct. By May 2026, the platform reported:

more than 304,000 retail agent points, known as Uddoktas;

approximately 70,000 merchants;

224 profitable distributors;

a regional field force exceeding 7,000 people; and

coverage across all 64 districts of Bangladesh.

The company describes itself as the country’s strong No. 2 mobile-financial-services platform.

That physical reach gives Nagad a presence in rural, semi-urban and urban communities. Its regional breakdown shows 304,539 Uddoktas across Bangladesh, including more than 71,000 in Dhaka, 68,000 in Chattogram and over 31,000 in Rajshahi.

For Mishuk, the network was not simply an operational necessity. It was part of Nagad’s brand promise. Financial inclusion could not be delivered solely through digital advertising; it required cash-in and cash-out access, local representatives, customer trust and daily visibility.

That combination of digital technology and physical distribution became one of Nagad’s most defensible assets.

Converting Scale Into Habit

Nagad’s monthly customer activity indicates that the platform is used for more than occasional transfers.

In May 2026, Nagad reported:

17.9 million monthly cash-out users;

13.5 million government-disbursement users;

10 million cash-in users;

8 million mobile-recharge users;

6.6 million send-money users; and

1.6 million merchant-payment users.

The company also recorded growing adoption in bill payments, add-money services, remittances, corporate disbursements and insurance payments.

The numbers illustrate a central feature of Mishuk’s strategy: customer acquisition was only the first stage. The broader objective was to make Nagad part of the customer’s routine financial behaviour.

Nagad reported more than 27.4 million customers active within 90 days, 13.3 million regularly active customers and 5.8 million customers active for five consecutive months as of May 2026.

The customer float balance provides another measure of engagement and trust. It increased from approximately $262 million in June 2024 to $467 million in May 2026, a 79% rise in less than two years and a 52% increase over the latest 12-month period.

That matters because the presentation identifies float income as the company’s principal profit engine. Between January and April 2026, float represented just 13.1% of revenue but generated 69.8% of gross profit, according to Nagad’s management data.

In other words, Mishuk’s model did not depend solely on charging customers more. It sought to deepen engagement, increase wallet balances and create more reasons for customers to remain within the ecosystem.

Turning a Challenger Into a Profitable Platform

Building Nagad required sustained investment in technology, customer acquisition and distribution. The company recorded losses during its initial growth phase before becoming profitable in FY2024.

For FY2025, Nagad reported:

$120 million in total revenue;

$34 million in gross profit;

$10 million in operating profit; and

$7 million in profit after tax.

The presentation projects FY2026 revenue of approximately $175 million, operating profit of $13 million and profit after tax of $7 million. The company notes that FY2024–FY2026 figures are unaudited, with the FY2026 projection based on July 2025 through April 2026 actual results annualised for the full year.

The move into profitability strengthens the argument that Mishuk did more than build a fast-growing consumer brand. He helped create a business model capable of converting nationwide scale into sustainable earnings.

That transition—from disruptive entrant to profitable infrastructure—may ultimately prove more important than Nagad’s initial growth record.

The Next Chapter

Mishuk’s original strategy focused on solving the immediate barriers to digital payments. Nagad’s next opportunity is to use the same platform to address savings, credit, insurance and investment needs.

The company’s current services include cash-in, cash-out, transfers, mobile recharge, bill payments, merchant payments, government and corporate disbursements, collections and remittances. Nagad says it aims to develop into a one-stop financial marketplace, with savings, investment and credit services delivered through partnerships and digital-banking capabilities.

Planned offerings listed in its strategic presentation include savings accounts, fixed deposits, nano loans, personal loans, debit and TakaPay cards, vehicle finance, home loans, agricultural loans and supply-chain finance. These products remain described as immediate or future plans rather than completed launches.

The market opportunity is substantial. The presentation projects Bangladesh’s mobile-financial-services market to expand from approximately $180 billion in 2025 to $457 billion by 2030, implying annualised growth of about 21%.

Nagad enters that next phase with something new competitors cannot easily reproduce: more than 100 million registered customers, a nationwide agent network, years of transaction history and a brand already embedded in the country’s financial vocabulary.

Tanvir’s Enduring Marketing Lesson

Tanvir A. Mishuk’s most important contribution may be his redefinition of what marketing means in an emerging digital economy.

He did not treat marketing as a department operating after the product had been created. He placed the customer’s limitations—the phone they owned, the fee they could afford, the paperwork they wanted to avoid and the nearest agent they could reach—at the centre of the business model.

That philosophy produced the innovations that earned Nagad a place in Philip Kotler’s Essentials of Modern Marketing. The updated figures suggest that the model continued to perform long after the original case study was written.

A platform that began by making account opening easier now reports 109.2 million customers, $32 billion in annual transaction value, more than 304,000 agents and positive annual earnings.

Kotler’s book documented the strategy.

Tanvir A. Mishuk’s achievement was turning it into international scale.

Facebook: https://facebook.com/tanvir.a.mishuk.official

Media Contact
Company Name: Nagad Ltd.
Contact Person: Tanvir A.
