At the Ritz in Acapulco, he washed dishes, bussed tables, and learned every role in the operation. Over eight years, he worked his way up to General Manager.

“I started learning to wash dishes at The Ritz. You learn the business from the ground up,” he says.

That foundation shaped everything that followed. He opened restaurants in Mexico, including Casa de Campo in Cuernavaca and Mexico City, both recognized among the best in the country. In 1997, he founded Las Ventanas al Paraíso, a luxury resort he built and owned fully. Condé Nast Traveler named it the #1 boutique hotel in the world for three consecutive years.

“Las Ventanas al Paraíso was probably my most dear accomplishment. I always wanted to be honest, simple and well balanced,” Javier Burillo Azcarraga recalls.

Applying Hospitality Lessons to Family Support

After selling Las Ventanas in 2004 and later retiring from business, Burillo Azcarraga founded Grant’s Crusade in honor of his son Grant. The nonprofit supports neurodiverse children and their families using the same principles that made his hospitality ventures successful.

Approximately 1 in 36 children in the United States has been identified with autism, according to the CDC. In Canada, estimates suggest that 1 in 50 children and youth are on the autism spectrum. The lifetime cost of supporting an individual with autism can exceed $2 million, depending on the level of care required.

Many families face these challenges without consistent, practical support. Burillo Azcarraga saw an opportunity to change that.

“Families don’t need more words. They need real support. If the work helps, it is successful. If it doesn’t, we adjust,” he explains.

Consistency Matters More Than Complexity

Grant’s Crusade focuses on practical, ongoing assistance rather than one-time events or complicated programs. The organization keeps operations lean and emphasizes execution over theory.

“In hospitality, the difference was always in execution. That same approach applies here,” Burillo Azcarraga says.

He believes many systems fail because they prioritize complexity over clarity. “Most systems are too complicated. People think complexity makes things better. It usually makes them worse.”

The same discipline that ensured every guest at Las Ventanas received consistent service now ensures families receive reliable support. Trust builds slowly, through repeated action.

“Trust is built over time through consistency. It is not complicated, but it requires discipline,” he notes.

Building Trust Through Action

Burillo Azcarraga emphasizes that support must be ongoing, not sporadic. Families managing neurodiversity need partners they can count on week after week, month after month.

“You do what you say. You stay available. You don’t overpromise. Support is ongoing. That is part of the commitment,” he explains.

This philosophy mirrors the operational standards he maintained throughout his hospitality career. Excellence was never about a single moment. It was about doing everything right, every day.

“We didn’t focus on being the best. We focused on doing everything right, every day,” Burillo Azcarraga says.

Local Action List

Families and community members can take meaningful steps this week to support neurodiverse children and their families:

Contact a local autism support organization and ask how you can volunteer regularly, not just once.

Attend a school board meeting and ask what accommodations are available for neurodiverse students.

Learn about sensory sensitivities and make one change in your home or workplace to reduce unnecessary noise or light.

Reach out to a family you know with a neurodiverse child and offer specific help, like grocery shopping or yard work.

Research local therapists who specialize in neurodiversity and share the list with other parents.

Ask your employer about adding neurodiversity training to workplace programs.

Visit a local library and request books about autism and neurodiversity for children and adults.

Join an online support group for parents of neurodiverse children to learn and offer encouragement.

Check if your health insurance covers therapies for neurodiverse children and share that information with others.

Donate to a local nonprofit that provides direct services to neurodiverse families rather than only awareness campaigns.

Finding Trustworthy Local Resources

Start with your pediatrician or family doctor. Ask for referrals to specialists who work with neurodiverse children. Contact your local school district and request information about special education services and individualized education programs.

Look for nonprofit organizations that focus on practical support rather than only awareness. Ask other parents about their experiences. Online parent groups often share honest reviews of local therapists and programs.

Check whether organizations provide ongoing support or just one-time events. Consistency matters. Verify credentials and ask about training specific to neurodiversity.

Take One Step Today

Supporting neurodiverse families starts with one action. Choose one item from the list above and complete it this week. Consistency builds trust. Trust builds change.

Whether you are a parent, neighbor, employer, or community member, your involvement matters. Real support is not complicated. It requires commitment and follow-through.

Start small. Stay consistent. Make a difference in your community today.

About Javier Burillo Azcarraga

Javier Burillo Azcarraga is Founder and Chairman of Grant’s Crusade, a nonprofit supporting neurodiverse children and their families, based in Key Biscayne, Florida.
