Special screening and discussion to explore the untold realities of student-athletes chasing dreams interrupted by circumstance.

NEW YORK, NY – Every athlete remembers the moment they realized the game could change their life. Few are prepared for the moment life changes the game.

On Sunday, July 12, 2026, an audience in Harlem will have the opportunity to experience that reality firsthand during a special screening of Battle for the Bid, a powerful docuseries that follows the Boston University men’s basketball team as they chase a dream interrupted by one of the most unprecedented moments in modern history.

Presented by Sahnte Jean Studios and supported by the New York Chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists, the event will take place at Comedy in Harlem, located at 750A St. Nicholas Avenue in New York City.

The timing feels especially fitting. As New York celebrates another championship chapter in basketball history following the Knicks’ third NBA title, Battle for the Bid shifts the spotlight away from professional arenas and onto a different kind of battle, one fought in locker rooms, classrooms, training facilities and within the minds of young athletes trying to hold on to a dream.

In 2020, the Boston University men’s basketball team stood on the doorstep of history. The program was positioned to make its first NCAA Tournament appearance under the Patriot League. Then the pandemic arrived and everything stopped.

The season ended. The opportunity vanished. The dream would have to wait.

Years later, Head Coach Joe Jones and a new group of players including Miles Brewster, Ethan Okwuosa and Malcolm Chimezie set out to finish what had been left unfinished. What unfolds is more than a basketball story. It is a deeply personal look at resilience, sacrifice, uncertainty and the difficult questions athletes face when the game that defines them won’t last forever.

“Battle for the Bid began as a reflection on a team pursuing a goal that had been taken away through no fault of their own,” said the film’s creator, Tenay Danille. “As the story unfolded, it became clear that this was about much more than basketball. It’s a story about commitment, identity, purpose and what happens when athletes begin preparing for the next chapter of their lives.”

The filmmaker hopes the project sparks a broader conversation about how colleges, universities and athletic programs can better support student athletes beyond competition.

“Even for athletes who achieve their dream of playing professionally, the game doesn’t last forever. The average career span for an athlete is three to seven years. Every athlete deserves the opportunity to explore who they are beyond sports and to prepare for a future that extends far beyond their final game.” At the heart of the series is a simple but powerful truth: setbacks may delay a dream but they do not have to define it. The film’s tagline, ‘Their moment was stolen but the mission remained,’ captures the spirit of a team determined not to be remembered for what they lost but for how they responded.

Following the screening, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a live Q&A discussion, offering a closer look at the experiences behind the story and the lessons learned along the way. Admission is free with RSVP. Doors open at 2:30 p.m. and the screening begins at 3:00 p.m. Refreshments will be available for purchase.
